Ten tips to make carpooling work well
Thanks to these 10 pieces of advice, you can make your carpooling journeys more enjoyable, more practical and safer:
- 1 - Share your trip with the right people. It could be possible to car-share with people from your entourage (school, company). All that is necessary is a communal space where people can write down their personal car-sharing requirements. It is thus easy to spot those who could share your journeys. Using karzoo as such a communal space means the right travelling companions can be found.
- 2 - Swap drivers. For journeys of more than 2h, it is preferable to change drivers and to regularly stop for some fresh air and relaxation. However, you must be sure that anybody who takes the wheel has their clean driving licence on them, and is an experienced driver. It is also advisable to take out a fully comprehensive insurance policy for the vehicle, in case of an accident.
- 3 - Select the correct time and place for your meeting. If the car-sharers live close to each other, the meeting place and drop-off point are easy to arrange. On the other hand, if they are a long way from each other, a strategic place for everybody must be chosen, which is either easily accessible via public transport, or on the driver’s route. As for the time, it is well-advised to select a time outside of rush hour. It must, nevertheless, be adapted to suit everybody.
- 4 - Share the costs fairly. It is indispensable to decide, before departing, upon the costs charged to each car-sharer. These include: petrol, tolls, insurance, oil, tyres, etc. It is up to the driver to decide how much detail to include. However, it is better that the car-sharers are forewarned to avoid any misunderstandings.
How to calculate costs?- Determine the vehicle’s average consumption for 100km.
- Multiply this figure by the length of the journey.
- Multiply the result obtained by the cost of fuel.
- Add any possible costs such as tolls or other charges to the figure obtained.
- Divide the total amount by the number of passengers.
- 5 - Choose between economy and comfort. Everybody can adapt their journey to their own budget. An economical car-sharer would prefer to avoid tolls and use secondary roads, while a car-sharer in search of comfort would choose a more direct, faster route, despite the various costs this will add.
- 6 - Establish precise rules. To car-share, you must know how to adopt suitable behaviour. Each driver has their own habits. It is best to know the conditions before departure. Is smoking permitted? Can music be played? Is eating permitted? Are animals allowed?
- 7 - Drive calmly and appropriately. The driver must drive smoothly and fully obey the highway code. In no circumstances may the driver consume alcohol or any illicit substance. Complete safety is paramount.
- 8 - Establish security and confidence. So that all car-sharers feel at ease, each passenger shows their IDs, and the driver shows their driving licence. This is to provide everybody with some reassurance.
- 9 - Make the necessary contact details known in case there is an accident. Each car-sharer should provide the contact details of the person to contact in the case of an emergency. This could be very useful in the case of an accident, malaise, illness, etc.
- 10 - Maintain a good atmosphere. Carpooling is meant to be fun. So avoid loaded subjects of conversation, interminable telephone calls or even behaviour which is out of place. Instead, make the most of the experience and create contacts.
