Choosing my car according to my needs...

Here are a few questions to ask yourself before purchasing a vehicle...

Upon what criteria should I base my choice?

· My needs: I choose my car according to how I intend to use it. Therefore, I consider its size, the different options available, and the number of people that it will carry.

The type of vehicle The number of persons carried
1 - 2 pers. 3 - 4 pers. 5+ persons
Small car suitable sometimes suitable not suitable
Medium-sized car sometimes suitable suitable sometimes suitable
Minivan sometimes suitable suitable sometimes suitable
Large car not suitable sometimes suitable suitable
Van not suitable not suitable suitable
  • suitable
  • suitable in certain cases
  • not suitable

· My financial means: I set myself a reasonable budget according to the money which I have available. I also consider the costs which I will inevitably have to face, such as maintenance, fuel, insurance.

In short: I find a good compromise between use, purchase price and consumption!
New or second-hand?

· Second-hand: it costs me less to purchase, but I could, however, lose out, as a car which is four or five years old has higher consumption, pollutes more, and emits more CO2. The saving made at the time of purchase might be lost very quickly!

· New: it costs me more at the time of purchase, but thanks to progress made in the field of automobiles, it has lower consumption, is less polluting, and emits less CO2.

In short: I make some calculations to determine which solution is the best adapted to my situation!
Large or small?

· A heavy, 4x4 type vehicle has higher consumption. For example, for a distance of 100km driven in cities, I use about 3.6 litres more than a saloon car would use.

· A lighter and less powerful vehicle uses less fuel and is cheaper to buy.

In short: I buy my car to fit my needs and not my wants!
